Well, interestingly enough, today was my first visit to the navy base here in Bahrain. Why, you ask, would I possibly go there? Well, I went with five other teachers from my school; two RCA Volunteers and three other teachers. Kim, the physics teacher, is a reservist and so she obviously has clearance to get us onto the base. We went there because we wanted to go out to lunch, and since it's Ramadan, it's the only place with restaurants open during lunch time! I ate at A&W and had a good old American root beer float and grilled chicken sandwich. It was pretty good!
What was weirdly not pretty good, however, was the fact that we were still being stared at. As one of my colleagues mentioned, it's hard to know which is worse: walking down the street and being stared at by Arab men, or walking down the sidewalk at the Navy base, being stared at by American men!! It was almost worse because there was such an abundance of men there.
Needless to say, it was certainly a strange phenomenon to be on "American soil", using American dollars, and feeling very out of place!
